Mr. Ludwig von Mises
The Freeman

New York 16, N.Y.
Dear Mr. von Mises
Your article on OUR LEFTIST ECONOMIC TEACHING, in the April
7 issue, is of course one hundred percent correct Aspane
who has taught the ideas of von Mises , Hayek etc. for many
years, and who, as a resilt of opposing the Reds and pinks
in his College has lost his job I am deeply concerned with
the matter you have brought up For that reason I wish to
tell you that you owe us another and more practical article.
The readers of The Freeman, and that may not be more than
some 15,000, won't disagree with you. What they want to know
is what can be done about the matter In the last six lines
of your article you mention the If remedy. Who will tell us
how it can be applied ?
The vast majority of Presidents and Deans ( not even to
mention high school administrators ) are mainly businessmen
and politicians and never have had either the inclination
or the time to study the problems to which you refer. They
are a bunch of fairly well-meaning, hypocritical and
platitudinous ignoramuses They are not even able to select
the proper professor.
Our side is hopelessly disorganized. At Montclair State Teachers
College where I taught international relations, I stood
alone against the Social Studies Department - about a dozen
x% the
colleagues. I know how the welfare state is systematically
indoctrinated in about eight high schools. If you believe in
free enterprise you don't even have a chance to get a reacom-
mendation form the placement bureau Unless your business
friends establish an independent placement bureau which
only recommends scholars who have been passed by men like
yourself, we don't have a fighting chance.
felia Wittener
Sincerely
Felix Wittmer, Ph.D.
