Dear Dr. von Mises :
Last Wednesday's visit with you was an exceptional pleasure.
It has become quite rare for me to be acquainted with
people whose conversation stimulates and who have a whole
hour to converse. Considering that " Kulturgeschichte " and
world affairs have been my main topics of study for the past
thirty years, it fascinates me particularly to hear about
such an important subject as economics, in which I am immensele
interested but have never had the opportunity to approach any
stage of expertness.
It was also quite nice to have the privilege of meeting Mrs.
von Mises personally. There is something of the Old Vienna
about her, which I greatly love. I used to live in the Josef-
städterstrasse. But in those days my friends were Stefan
Zweig and the crazy " Literaten."
It also was a coincidence that you gave me your !! Middle-of-
the Road Policyll pamphlet at a time at which I was completing
an article on a related subject. Two or three sentences of
the first draft, which I am enclosing, were inspired by our
conversation . If you have time to glance at it, I would be
most grateful for criticism. Articles can always be improved;
first drafts in particular. ( Flaubert was one of my favorites
when Inwas in my teens. Consequently, I am an obsessed stickler
for approaches to perfection in writing.)
Should you by any chance consider the article as good, I would
appreciate your writing a word to Mr. De Witt Wallace, Mt. Kisco,
N.Y. He is the most important man in Reader's Digest, and I
have very good reason to believe that he is toying with the
idea of printing this particular article in his magazine.
Thanks again for a pleasant afternoon hour. " Empfehlen Sie
mich bitte Ihrer werten Frau Gemahlin. "
Sincerely yours,
Telix Withmer
