Dear Mr. Donaldson:
A short time ago I inquired of my very good friend, Leonard
Read, if he know how it might be possible to secure permission to quote
the publications of Ludwig von Mises. The particular line of endeavor
in which I am interested can best be explained by giving you an idea
of what I plan to do with the quotations.
I haston to state that Leonard has given me permission to use
his name in introducing myself and this plan to you, and that he has
expressed his interest and pleasure at the prospect of this program.
I apologize in advance for the length of this letter but hope
that, when you have finished reading it, you will feel that the idea
proposed herein is worthwhile.
This project I am taking on is proving to be rather enormous
but I feel so definitely that it is worthwhile that I am going ahead
with it as rapidly as possible.
I have been enormously irritated by the "canned" releases
which appear in the newspapers, especially the smaller dailies. These
releases are extremely one-sided and aimed at describing the benevo-
lence of government and centralization of power in Washington or in
various bureaus.
I have discussed this matter with a number of individuals,
some newspaper editors and publishers, publishers of books and
pamphlets, representatives of a few foundations and some business
concerns. They have agreed with my impression. There has been no
agency disseminating information in favor of "our side".
A few years ago I became acquainted with an individual who
was more than ordinarily interested in this matter. Events have
finally brought the matter to a head and I am now embarking on a
project which I hope will meet with your approval and secure your
co-operation.
Every week publishers and editors receive large quantities
of "filler" and mats from such groups as those supporting federal aid
to education, expansion of Social Security, etc., etc. My idea is
simply this - to establish a "filler" service which will supply the
newspapers of this country with filler from "our side". Dependent on
