Dear Professor von Mises,
I am indebted for the favour of your address
to Mrs. Rose Wilder Lane, whose book THE DISCOVERY OF FREEDOM I have
started translating in German and French.
I take the liberty to ask you some informa-
tions concerning liberalism. I am only 29 and had had to interrupt
my studies for three years owing to the Hitler war.
Mrs. Lane lastly suggested that I translate
eventually in German and French your 11 Planned Chaos " of the Foundat.
L. Economic Education. I then promised to see how things went with her
book, but am more and more disposed to do these 60 or so pages beside
Mrs. Lane's big book.
As after all I am only a student of liberalism
I beg you to let me know which books ( in English, French and German )
you advise me to read, the pro-liberals as well as the most intelligent
and the most read socialists, planners and the like. I think it clever
to read the enemies of liberalism too, because their books will supply
me with interesting ideas as regards utopia of socialism, etc
I have already most of your American-isuued
books ( even two Germans: Kritik des Intervent. and Grundlagen der
Nationalökonomie; as to " Liberalismus 11 I was informed some months
ago by Fischer Jena, that " es auf Anordnung der Behörden makuliert
werden musste If ), those of Hayek and Ropke.
Please let me also know some time ( or tell
me please where I can apply for those informations ) where I can get
new or second-hand literature of older authors ( before World War I
and II ).
A French liberal wrote me last year - Un joli
livre reste à faire: " Queet que le libéralisme ". Cela ne vous ten
terait pas ? - The more I think of it, the more I get eager to do it.
Once I shall have finished with Mrs. Lane's book., I am likely to start
this great enterprise. Therefore I should like to get the most possible
informations to prepare this work. I know very well English, French
and German and some Italian and Dutch. So I can read most books in the
original version.
