Professor Ludwig von Mises
New York, N.Y.
Dear Professor von Mises:
I am very sorry that I shall not be able to attend this meet-
ing and, therefore, not be able to express my thoughts and feelings
in person. These few lines can serve only as a poor substitute of
what I want to say. I wish to express my thankfulness to your for
all I learned from you (and very much of it in the Privat seminar),
and for your unfailing kindness and forbearance. Most of what I
have ever learned in Economics I learned in the Privat seminar, and
there has been very little to change and to revise since. Above all
I have learned, and I am thankful f or it, what scholarship requires:
the development of ideas without regard to persons, times, and
surroundings, the greatest regard for the correctness of thought
combined with the greatest tolerance as to the persons who think
differently. This is more than the technical details, which come
with it. I have never found a place in the United States comparable
to the Privat seminar. Let me, then, thank you for everything, and
please accept my best wishes - ad multos annos.
Yours very sincerely,
Waller Breakerl
