Dear Dr. von Mises:
Böhm-Bawerk more than 70 years ago, which is a long time,
wrote "The Austrian Economists" which was published in The
Annals in January 1891. Not only is that old but it has a
technical character because it was written for economists.
It is my opinion (but I may be wrong) that the subject
of Neoclassicism requires a more popular and up-to-date
presentation, taking in its sweep Classical economics, Socialist
economics and Neoclassical economics.
I also hold the opinion that it should be profoundly com-
prehensive and erudite, but that the presentation should be
extraordinarily simple and wholly intended for a lay reader and
young students. It should constitute an "orientation" of
economic history and theory.
It is an injustice to you to let Böhm-Bawerk's "The
Austrian Economists" stand today unamended by reference to your
work. But no one else should be your spokesman in that regard,
and I see no real problem in your being descriptive of your
work. I myself would not worry about the "good form" of that.
No one else lives today who is competent to do justice to
the subject. The essay should be the equivalent in recommended
economic reading what a blueprint is for a contractor con-
structing a building.

I would be happy to undertake to publish what you write,
probably in the form of a paperback to sell off of a book rack
at a popular price. I would imagine that 48 pages would be an
absolute minimum of length, but it might run as many pages as
PLANNING FOR FREEDOM (186).
I tell people that PLANNING FOR FREEDOM is the best intro-
duction to your works. But I think a book on the position of
Austrian Neoclassical thought by you would be substantially
better.

The foregoing is submitted for whatever it may be worth
and with the consciousness that it may not fit in with your
own plans. Regards.
Yours very truly
