Prof. Dr. Ludwig von Mises and Mrs. von Mises
c/o Hotel Istoria
Seefeld, Tyrol, Austria
Dear Dr. and Mrs. von Mises:
We plan to leave for Europe on Thursday, August 27, via KLM.
I am enclosing a copy of our schedule as far as it has been
prepared.
In The Hague I hope to call on Ir. H. I. Keus and a broker
named Mr. P. A. Huet of Pierson, Heldring & Pierson. I may also
visit Dr. Zeegers, a former member of Mont Pelerin Society who left
when Roepke did, but who will be at the Semmering meeting as an
observer. In addition, I wish to get genealogical data in regard
to Mrs. Nymeyer's and my ancestors. I am proud to have just com-
pleted a book of seventy-four pages presenting Mrs. Nymeyer's
genealogy on her mother's father's side back for more than 500 years.
Next we are going to Arnheim in The Netherlands for a day or
two to get data on my mother's family and some of my wife's family.
Next we plan to go to Köln to see Dr. Hans Hellwig, if
possible, of DEUTSCHE ZEITUNG. I hope to "work on him" in regard
to American politics.
We may stop at Bonn, and from there we go to Frankfort where
I am endeavoring to get an appointment with the partners who put
out FRANKFURTER ALLGEMEINE, again with politics in mind.
After Semmering we go back to Vienna for a couple of days
beachuse we have never been there before, and then on to Zurich
where I intend to try to work on the editor of NEUE ZURCHER ZEITUNG.
I would like to talk a lot with people in Europe in regard to
the international gold situation. Its detailed technicalities
I do not understand and do not expect to be able to master, but the
gold situation is very important to us because our investments are
approximately 70% in common stocks of domestic and foreign
corporations and 30% in South African gold mining stocks, the latter
a hedge against the common stock investment. Obviously the gold
mining stocks are in lieu of holdings of bonds or mortgages. Of
course we are acutely aware of the political danger in regard to
the gold mining stock investments.
Anything that I can do to reappraise the international money,
credit and gold situation I ought to do on this trip, despite my
being a dilettante in knowledge in regard to the whole situation.
Really, I think it is somewhat silly to travel unless someone can
learn something that way which he cannot learn otherwise.
I am working actively for the election of Goldwater as I
consider him much to be preferred to Johnson.
