Frederich Unger to Ludwig von Mises Letter, January 14, 1942
FREDERICH UNGER
2524 WARRING STREET
BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA
January. 14, 1942.
Dear Professor and Mrs. Mises,
In a way, your letter of 9th was very welcome
news to us, and we appreciate the idea that the
lecturing trip to Mexico City is to take place.
That interesting country will give your minds some
other direction than war and world problems.
On the other hand your letter was something of
disappointing to me personally. I had expect to see
you shortly, either here in Berkeley or in New York
as I am scheduled to go to New York for about three
weeks. According to your last letter you will be
just in Mexico while I visit New York, and our hope
to see you here for some days on your way back seems
to be pretty faint.
I passed your answer to Professor Ellis and
to Professor Cross, the Chairman of the Economic De-
partment of U.C. Ellis was somewhat disappointed and
I laid the stress on the travelling difficulties in
which I don't believe too much myself. Financially:
lecturing here is no profitable business. Professor
Bonn who lectured at U.C. once last fall got a pay
of not more than 50$; I did not attend the lecture,
but I can remember that Dr. Basch who had to attend
found it very weak. Thus he did a job which was not
worth more than was his fee anyway.
Under these circumstances we cannot insist too
much on our suggestion, though we should have enjoyed
these few days with both of you, and you would have
got a better idea about our house and our ways of life
here than from any lengthy description.
Yet, I hope that your planned visit here will
be only postponed and the idea is not abandoned forever.
News from here: Gitta passed her first term with
two A and two B, good but not excellent. Today we had
the visit of Mr. and Mrs. Offenheimer, there was talk
also about you.
I had in mind to talk to you in New York at some
length about the Austrian Leage question and I regret
