PERSONAL HISTORY
of
Henry Blumenthal, 2319 Ashby Ave. ,Berkeley 5, Cal.
Born in Graudenz, West Prussia, on October 21,1911.
Attended Oberrealschule at Potsdam, Germany.
Made the abiturium in March 1930.
Studied at the University of Berlin from 1930 to 1933:
European history under oncken, Meinecke, and Hoetzsch;
and the minor fields of journalism under Dovifat,
and psychology under Wolfgang Koehler.
Left for Brazil in 1935,du to the political changes in Germany.
Immigrated into the United States in 1938 and became a US. citizen
in 1944.
Served with the US.army from 1943 to 194o;during the last year, in
the capacity of technical instructor for the Office of Military
Government, US. ,Berlin.
Studied at the University of California from 1941 to1943, and from
1946 to 1949:
European history under Kerner, Guttridge, and Palm;
US history under Harper, Hicks, and Paxson;
Political theory under Gettell and Winkler.
Received the M.A.degree in history in February 1943,and
the Ph.D. degree in history in June 1949.
Was appointed teaching assistant in history at the University of
California for the academic year 1947-1948.
Wrote the Ph.D. thesis on 1 Diplomatic Relations between the United
States and France, 1836 - 1861 The thesis is based on comprehĂȘnsive
research of the source material in the National Archives and the
Library of Congress.
