Lawrence Fertig to Ludwig von Mises Letter, July 2, 1968
LAWRENCE FERTIG
535 FIFTH AVENUE
NEW YORK, N. Y. 10017
July 2, 1968
Dear Lu,
Bertha and I were thinking of you yesterday when the heat
in New York under the sun was close to 100 deg. We felt happy that you
were up in the mountains where the air is fresh and cool and we do hope
you are enjoying it up there.
Very little news here. I talked to Harry and he is busy
completing a very brief miniature paper-back book on the Welfare State.
He seems to think it may be a money-maker, but I am not sure. I really
wish that Harry could devote himself more to writing books of permanent
value. He has such a brilliant mind and simple style that he can make
a real contribution in that direction instead of frittering away time
on things which have no permanent value. I expect to have the Hazlitts
visit us at Sands Point soon and we'll talk about these matters.
I enclose a statement which I clipped from some comments
on the stock market -- a statement which is really shocking, and I
thought you might like to have it for your files. When the Chairman of
the Board of TIME magazine talks such nonsense what can we expect of
other commentators or the general public?
It's been beastly hot here and it continues that way today.
It really doesn't affect me and Bertha because our place is so cool and
Bertha enjoys swimming in the pool on hot days. But it would be much
more comfortable in New York if we got a breeze.
That's all for now. Bertha and I send our affectionate
greetings.
As ever,
