Memorandum from LAWRENCE FERTIG
August 14, 1968
Dear Lu:
You probably received my last note,
saying that the invitation requesting payment
for tickets to the dinner on October 4th was
sent you in error. Attached to this letter is
your cancelled check.
You must have read a great deal about the
mess resulting from the decision of President Hester
to confirm the appointment of the Negro, Hatchett, for
a post at the University.
I told Hester on the 'phone that calling
in Goldberg to give his approval was just a white-
wash job. Hatchett has never renounced his racist
statement, nor has he apologized in any way for what
he said. More important still is the fact that he is
a Negro militant -- and this the University apparently
knew before they appointed him.
As I told Hester, this appointment will
give strength to the Negro militants and discourage
the moderates. Hatchett will undoubtedly provide
scholarships for hard-core Negro separatists, which
is precisely what the University does not need.
I consulted with Jack Holman, and he advised
me not to resign from the Board because of this.
I decided to remain silent for a while because,
after all,: if one is a member of a team or a party
or a University Board, you do not resign every time
a bad decision is made. That is, unless the decision
is very very vital.
I believe the Hatchett affair will get
worse, not better. See the enclosed letter from
today's New York Times. I think the repercussions
