Leading apologists for the past era, such as Sumner Welles, John Gunther, and
Raymond Swing, have contended that the Yalta agreements would have strength-
ened peace and world order if only the Soviet government had not betrayed them.
Felix Wittmer, by offering an impressive array of documented facts, demonstrates
that the Yalta Pact itself represents a betrayal of American principles.
Carefully citing data upon data, the author shows that Yalta is but the climax
of a long series of betrayals which started with the recognition of the U.S.S.R.,
and which stemmed from ignorance of Soviet aims, strategy, and tactics on the
part of America's highest authorities. As the pattern of our costly errors unfolds in
this historical essay, President Roosevelt and his closest advisers appear unmasked as
adulators of a totalitarian monstrosity. When Roosevelt died a broken man, he
himself-as the booklet discloses-glimpsed the range and depth of his tragic
failure, for which the American people have been paying in blood and money.
By its synthesis of seemingly separated occurrences the book shows how, through-
out the years, the Communist world conspiracy assailed and undermined America
from without and within. Rather than expressing opinions the author lets the prin-
cipal actors of the drama and the most salient events of the unfortunate era speak
for themselves. The result is a deepened insight into America's number one problem
of survival. It is left to the reader to draw his own conclusions.
This little book is required reading for the student of world affairs as well as
the student of Communism. Because of its simplicity and inherent dynamism it
will appeal to the general reader.
An analyst of world affairs, Dr. Wittmer has taught at American colleges for more
than twenty years. His articles on Communism and world affairs, in THE AMERICAN
LEGION MAGAZINE, AMERICAN MERCURY, THE FREEMAN, HUMAN
EVENTS, and NATIONAL REPUBLIC have attracted national attention.
