Dr. Ludwig von Mises
777 West End Avenue
New York, New York 10025
Dear Dr. von Mises:
The enclosed brochure is sent to you, by me, at the request of my
good friend Wm. J. Grede, a former President of the National
Association of Manufacturers and former head of the international
YMCA. This is because he thought that my personal acquaintance
with you might cause you to give the brochure more prompt and
more careful reading than if he mailed it to you himself.
It is the function of The John Birch Society to provide our members
and through our members all of the public that we can reach --
the information, knowledge, understanding, and we hope even the
inspiration, which will help to create a more favorable climate for
political activities by the Conservatives in all parties. But the So-
ciety itself takes no direct part in politics whatsoever. And hence
neither do I, as its head.
It is certainly proper, however, for me to point out that Mr. Grede,
as Chairman of The 1976 Committee, already has associated with
him in the leadership of that Committee such outstanding American
Conservatives as Admiral Ben Moreell, Dean Clarence Manion,
Mr. W. B. McMillan of St. Louis, the Honorable Loyd Wright of Los
Angeles, and many more. It is their belief that the grass-roots sup-
port of The 1976 Committee and its immediate objectives can rapidly
swell into a miraculous influence for restoring political sanity to the
American scene.
I am authorized to tell you, on behalf of Mr. Grede and his asso-
ciates, that they would like very much indeed to have you join them,
as one of the one hundred members of this Committee, and give the
great weight of your name and prestige to their vital undertaking.
To support this invitation I must, of course, allow the enclosed
brochure to present their argument. But the address, if you care
to write Mr. Grede, and as given in the brochure itself, is The 1976
Committee, 1835 Oakton Street, Des Plaines, Illinois 60018. Or
you may wish to write directly and personally to Mr. Wm. J. Grede,
