Dear Mr. von Mises:
Miss Yerkes has passed along to me the pages you've just
returned, and I'm very glad to see that the editing and revising is
coming along so well. There are still a few points that we'll hold
for later discussion with you-one, for example where you dismiss
econometrics as "nonsense." I'm sure that by substituting "explodes
all econometrics as built on rickety foundations" you can say sub-
stantially the same thing, without opening yourself to counterthrusts
with quotations by the reviewers. Here, and in a few similar cases,
you can lose readers that might otherwise be persuaded. As you well
know, I should be among the last to suggest that you change an opin-
ion; but I'd like to see the book reach others than those who already
may be counted among your admirers, and you should not too easily
give weapons to the opposition.
We'll hold a list of these instances until the end of the
manuscript, and then Miss Yerkes or I will get together with you on
the specific cases.
A happy New Year to you and to your wife.
Sincerely yours,
Supress Daudt
