Dear Mr. von Mises:
Those of us here who have read your manuscript GOVERNMENT
AND BUSINESS have found it interesting and in spots absorbing.
But we cannot quite see in what course or courses the book would
have a sale sufficient to cover publication costs.
One reader, for example, reported: "It is far too advanced,
for the most part, to make satisfactory collateral reading for the
usual introductory course in economics, and it is much too brief
and condensed to find wide acceptance in courses on government and
business or on the 'isms. Too, many teachers would object to the
complete omission of monopolistic competition and to the very
limited number of subjects discussed. After all, there are many
types of linterventionism' besides those dealing with price fixing,
credit inflation, and confiscation which merit inclusion in a book
of this sort. II
This same reader wrote me that he does not feel you can do
full justice to your position in so small a scope, which may be
one of the difficulties.
By any chance have you thought of publication with one of
the university presses which publish various studies in Economics?
Another suggestion would be that one of the learned journals might
be willing to publish the material running over three or four
issues.
I am sorry indeed that we cannot make you an offer of publi-
cation, but unfortunately we have to look at our balance sheet, and
particularly so these days. I am returning your manuscript separately.
Your book on Nazism I have turned over to our Trade Depart-
ment, who are looking at it now. I shall let you know their decision
as soon as I hear from them.
Very sincerely yours,
James Manager can 1002
