Dear Professor von Mises,
Many thanks for your letter of the 4th
inst. and the valuable information it gave me. Many thanks for
the genuine liberal 11 too. I shall do all to deserve this name
for the next years.
In my last letter I said that I had
books of Ropke and Hayek too, but forgot to mention that as regards
the first, he does not always advocate genuine liberalism, for
instance in his 11 Gesellschaftskrisis der Gegenwart 11 As for the
second - I did not yet read his books - Mrs. Lane wrote me last
week that he too did not always ask for true lib.
I am grateful to Professor Hayek for his
article in the last number of 11 the owl ", where he suggested that
liberals throughout the world ought to co-operate more. This indu-
ced me to write finally to you and to him. I am still waiting for
his answer; I asked him to inform me about the coming meetings of
liberal economists etc
in Europe.
I shall feel much obliged for all the in-
formation you can give me on genuine liberals of Europe and on
eventual of their conferences. Are there still true liberals in
France, Germany, Switzerland etc
beside Bertrand de Jouvenel and
J. Rueff ?
Thanks for your translation rights. Owing
to a lot of work I cannot promise immediately to have done with the
French and German translation for July 1, 1953. I shall inform you
in two weeks or so. Then I see how I advance with the German version
of Mrs. Lane's 11 THE DISCOVERY OF FREEDOM ". I already translated
2 pages in German, to see how I should advance with PLANNED CHAOS
and so am likely to do both versions for the stipulated delay !
- As to point 2, I agree. I undertake the work only to help propa-
gate genuine liberalism in Europe. I shall keep the money, I make
of it, to constitute a fund for my travel expenses, once I am in a
position to come to the States. and exchange ideas with U. S. liber
rals.
I plan to start in 5 years with my book
11 Qu'est ce que le libéralisme ". I shall feel free to ask you
from time to time for informations. - I shall first gather suffici-
ent material. Here my roughly sketched plan: I shall examine the
problem from the political ( perhaps philosophical too ), economi-
cal and moral point of view. I sometimes hesitate to think of my
enterprise, because many if not most of the ideas I shall have to
dvelop, have already been given by someone else. That would take
a little the personal character of the work. Perhaps I am wrongand
am still too much in the 11 état d'esprit " of a student working on
