Ludwig von Mises to Jean-Pierre Hamilius Letter, March 28, 1952
March 28, 1952
Professor J. P. Hamilius
23, rue du Stadion
Diffordango, Luxembourg
Dear Professor Hamilius:
You are correct in pointing out that Ropice (and,
to Mimo extent, even Hayek) doos not advocate genuine liberal-
ism but rather a system of "mild" interventionism. The
number of genuine liberals is very small today. Most of
those considered as champions of economic freedom are merely
condemning interventionism operated by other parties or in-
dividuals and recommend as a remedy their own brand of in-
terventionism.
As you own already most of the books you will
receive on the part of the Volker Fund, please hand over
the duplicates in the name of the Volker Fund to that 11-
brary of your country where, in your opinion, they would
contribute most to the spread of sound thinking.
Also in the U: S. there are groups asking for
Mitbestimungsrecht of the employees. I do not remember
having ever heard of a condemnation of this claim on the
part of the unions. If you want to get reliable information
about this issue, write to the CIO and to the AFL. They
will certainly send you their publications about this
problem.
Are you familiar with the amazing way in which
William Temple, the Archbishop of Canterbury, justified
the participation by labor in the conduct of business in
his Penguin Special: Chris ianity and Social Order
(pages 72 f and 80).
with best wishes
Sincerely yours
