Dear Professor von Mises:
It just dawned upon me that you might be interested in hearing my opinion
about Mr. William François' new publication $ 3 volumes ) a copy of which
is likely to have reached you by now.
I felt sorry when seeing that a part by Professor Rüstow had been included
without my having been told about it before the publication. Monsieur Fran-
çois when starting oh his new and bold venture only told me about the
contributions of yours, Dr. Hayek and Dr. Ropke. I am afraid that the
Rüstow point of view will spoil some of the good impression the 3 volumes
would have created otherwise. Or should I say: Let us hope that I am wrong.
As I am likely to see Mr. François at Paris during one of the next weeks, I
shall not fail to submit to him my fear
On the other hand I avail myself of the opportunity for asking you an infor-
mation I forgot unfortunately to mention in Austria last September. As a
member of the board of the American-Luxembourg Society since several years,
I have frequent opportunities of meeting the staff of the US Embassy here.
The new ambassador, Mr. William Rimkin from Chocago, arrived here about two
or three years. I cannot prevent from having the feeling that he does not
like me too much despite the fact that I never had any discussion or so
with him along the lines of genuine liberalism.
Two of his secretaries once asked me about you, as they must have been gi-
ven some information from the US or elsewhere. Then they mentioned the fact
that Mr. Rivkin waslikely to have had once a debate with you on the TV.
Could that be the case ? If yes, will you kindly let me know with some
details, as far as you do remember ? I should take a real great pleasure in
asking the ambassador directly about the said TV debate. Wasn't it not
Clausewitz who is often quoted as having said: If Den Feind ( here: den Gegner
nicht zur Ruhe kommen lassen ! "
Looking forward to the pleasure of hearing from you and of meeting you to-
gether with your charming wife at Stresa, next September, I remain,
Cordially yours,
P. S.: My health is improving from day to day !
Mr. Rivkin is a lawyer by formation.
