Libertarians, Incorporated to Ludwig von Mises Announcement
LIBERTARIANS, INCORPORATED
ANNOUNCES
A Seminar For Libertarian Minds, 25, 26 and 27 August
To Be Held At Lakeville, Connecticut
YOU HAVE BEEN SELECTED to be a participant at this seminar. You
have been chosen because of your fine mind. This seminar is dedi-
cated to the end of bringing together the top brains in the
libertarian camp for discussion of three extremely important topics.
They are: Thursday, 25 August - THE NEW CONSERVATISM; Friday, 26
August - RIGHT TO WORK; Saturday, 27 August - PREVENTIVE WAR.
This is not a publicity-seeking stunt. We don't give a hoot if
nobody knows that this seminar has taken place. We are not promo-
ting the seminar in order to issue a Statement or otherwise declare
on the state of the world.
We are interested, first and foremost, in a scholarly exercise of
the highest order which will profit the individuals who attend.
We believe you will materially add to the quality of this seminar.
We want, therefore, to induce you to come.
Lakeville is a small town in Northwestern Connecticut. Situated by
Lake Wononskopomuc, it is in the heart of an area SO unprogressive
in character as to have escaped the scars of industrialization.
This part of the country, while the despair of politicians, is
prodigal of beauty. There are over twenty lakes in the area,
countless streams (including the lovely Housatonic), idyllic towns.
If you are interested in swimming, sailing, tennis, golf, fishing,
hiking, studying colonial architecture, getting rooked by antique
shops, this section of the country will please you. The seminar
will not take up so much of your time that you will be unable to
pursue any of these interests.
Jammed with teachers, artists, writers, musicians and economists,
this section of the country is also a hotbed of collectivism.
In broad outline, the schedule will run as follows:
Participants will arrive Wednesday night, 24 August, in time for
dinner. (The train from New York City to Amenia, where you will be
met upon notifying us of the mode of transportation you will take,
leaves the city at 4:32 DLS, arriving at Amenia 6:53 DLS; if you
prefer to travel by car, road time from New York to Lakeville is
21/2 hours, via Taconic State Parkway, Exit 44, Millbrook, Amenia,
Sharon.)
We hope to attract between 20 and 50 participants. If 50 should
come, they will be divided at dinner into seminar groups of, say,
10 each.
These five groups will meet separately in the morning. They will
discuss the topic of the day. Towards the end of the session, they
will select two men each who seem to represent the most outstanding
or contrary views.
The two men from each group will then form a second seminar, the
session to take place in the afternoon. These 10 men will try to
crystallize the various arguments and come up with fairly specific
cases, which they will consign to two of their number.
Both speakers selected from the afternoon session will then prepare
a fifteen minute brief apiece which they will deliver in an evening
public meeting. After they have delivered their fifteen minute
talks, the subject will be given over to the floor for discussion.
The morning seminar sessions will be semi-private; in that certain
people (such as the teachers of the area) will be allowed to audit
without participation.
