Dear Prof. von Mises: Mont Pelerin Society - Tokyo Meeting You have received a notice from Professor Leoni that a special meeting of the Mont Pelerin Society will take place in Tokyo from September 5 to 10. going to Tokyo is not cheap. The round-trip (in season) economy jet fare to Tokyo is $760 from the West Coat, $930 from the Middle West and $998 from New York. First class is $1235, $1467 and $1555 respectively. It would be possible to reduce the fare by almost 25%, if the members and their families were to travel as an "affinity" group. A minimum of 25 group members are required to obtain the special rate, which would be $555 from the West Coast and $714 from the Midwest; - a saving of about $200. While Northwest Orient Airlines provides a direct flight from New York to Tokyo via Seattle, and there are other direct flights from (hicago and the West Coast, these are very long flights. The New York flight de- parts at 2.30 PM and arrives in Tokyo at 8. 40 PM. Allowing for the dif- ference in time, however, the actual flight takes about 17 hours. It would be far less strenuous to stop for a day or two in Anchorage for rest. On the return flight a stop-over in Honolulu would be advisable for the same reason. Besides, I presume, most members will want to see more of Japan than merely Tokyo and Nikko. An additional week in Japan would permit a visit to Kyoto, the Inland Sea and Hiroshima. Having had for many years, as a hobby, one toe in the travel business, I have taken it upon myself to contact various airlines. Northwest Orient provides the shortest route to the Orient via Alaska; Japan Airlines provide special color and excellent service; Pan Am's round-the-world flights are definitely superior. All three lines would be willing to offer group space
