Dear Dr. von Mises:
We originally had 10,000 copies of "Middle-of-the-Road
Policy Leads to Socialism printed. We disposed of a large
quantity, but then the movement practically stopped because
PLANNING FOR FREEDOM was published.
Presently, Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, California,
is buying "Middle-of-the-Road" and now we have the inquiry from
Mr. Jordan, see copy of letter attached as well as his latest
letter SO that you can see what the situation is. Find enclosed
self-addressed stamped envelop for returning it.
I think we ought to have some more copies of "Middle-of-
the-Road Policy Leads to Socialism" printed. If we do that, we
would use an offset printer in town here, Mr. Alonzo Kallemyn
who operates the Park Press.
I do not know how well we have informed you about the at-
tempts of Knott's Berry Farm to put books we have published by
you or Bbhm-Bawerk on a self-service rack in the same way as
other paperbacks are sold. This is an endeavor which is in the
embryonic stage but it interests me.
In my mind, PLANNING FOR FREEDOM is not exactly ideal for
that purpose. For example, the lecture you gave at the University
Club in Milwaukee has always belonged, in my opinion, with this
book of essays. Furthermore, you have written in recent years
many short and pungent articles which ought to be included in a
"popular" book of essays by you.
Take, for example, your essay "Lord Keynes and Say's Law.' "
I think it is a jewel of simplicity and cogency, but not too many
people seem to be aware of how well you laid that cornerstone as
a basic idea.
I am, therefore, raising the question with you whether or
not you would wish to think in terms of another book of essays
with a different title than "PLANNING FOR FREEDOM, 11 furthermore
that its foremat would be particularly suited to sales from
book racks in book stores and drug stores?
The inconsistency ( or confusion) of my thinking is that in
such a new book of essays I would be under some temptation to
