Henry Regnery to Ludwig von Mises Letter, January 30, 1986
January 30, 1967
Professor Ludwig von Mises
777 West End Avenue
New York 25, N.Y.
Dear Professor von Mises:
I greatly enjoyed your visit last Tuesday, and I thank you for
taking the trouble to come in. I am sorry that I couldn't go to
the lecture Tuesday evening, but it was impossible.
I will enclose a copy of a letter I just received from a librarian.
Could you suggest anything? I will send him the list I put together
of "Classics of Modern Conservatism", but I am sure that he wants
a more extensive list of books than this, and also one prepared by
an acknowledged authority in the field.
When you were here last week you asked why we didn't publish
an economics journal. I have thought about this since then; the
answer is quite simple-- would like to do something of this sort,
but it would take a substantial amount of money. We have had some
experience with the publication of journals--when I first went into
publishing, we published a quarterly for a group at the University of
Chicago called Measure. It was a publication of the highest quality,
and I think had some influence, far more than one would expect from
Henry
its circulation which, as I remember, was about ,000. The Foundation
for Foreign Affairs, with which I was associated from its founding until
Regnery
about a year ago, has published Modern Age for some years, and I was
closely connected with this. I have a fairly good idea, therefore, I
Company
think, of what is required to make an effective journal, and how much
money it would cost.

I have no idea whether it would be possible to finance such a venture,
but I would like to talk to you about it sometime if you think that there
Chicago, Illinois 60610
might be a possibility of finding the money it would require. I have
527-3300
thought about the subject, and have some ideas about some of the
practical problems in connection with the editing, production, etc.
I will probably be coming to New York sometime within the next month
or two; perhaps we could talk about all this at that time.
