Dear Lu,
Not much is happening down here. Weather hot, but not
unpleasant, and of course living at Sands Point near the water
is sheer delight these days.
Have you seen a compilation of some of Hayek's essays in
a paper-back book called STUDIES IN PHILOSOPHY, POLITICS AND
ECONOMICS? I spent last weekend reading in it and I just wrote
a note to Hayek this morning in which I told him of my great
admiration for his work, and my delight at reading many of these
essays. I called particular attention to "The Theory of
Complex Phenomena", "The Results of Human Action but not of
Human Beings" and "Unions, Inflation and Profits."
Leonard Read told me some time ago that Hayek's morale
was rather low because he did not feel that his work was being
properly appreciated, and so I felt that I owed him an enthusi-
astic letter about this series of essays. Of course I had
read many of them independently, but re-reading them refreshed
my mind, and I also found many new essays that reflect Hayek's
great wisdom.
I told Leonard Read on the 'phone this morning
that I thought the Foundation ought to help distribute this
book in order to counteract the modern tendency towards instant
solutions, instant laws and instant wisdom.
I enclose for your summer reading an excellent statement
from the Wall Street Journal on the Supreme Court decision favoring
the New York Times.
Also enclosed is a statement by Dean Acheson, formerly
Secretary of State, which appeared in the N.Y. Times. In recent
years Acheson has become a much wiser man about communism,
politics, etc == but I cannot forget all the harm he did when he
had other ideas as Secretary of State.
I hope you and Margit are enjoying the fine weather we have been
having. I'11 be writing you sometime soon again.
Love to you and Margit.
My best.
