contest held on Saturday, April 12, 1997, in
Washington D.C.
The judging was based on two parts, the
paper itself and a fifteen-minute presenta-
tion given by one of the students. The
group was led by Dr. Timothy Mohr, assis-
tant professor of electrical engineering, and
the paper was written by seniors Kyle
Wills, Daniel Buckingham, Brian Craig,
and Matthew Orley. Kyle Wills presented
the paper to the judges.
Their project was titled "Development of
a System for Categorizing Human Activ-
ity." It drew from Wills' recent summer
internship at the Cleveland Clinic. Their
idea was to design a portable unit that
could monitor movement. The information
from this device could be used in preven-
tion research for osteoporosis. It monitors
the amount of inactivity in older persons
before they actually develop the disease.
The group designed and built a small,
lightweight, battery-powered device worn
on the waist and thigh that logs activity for
a twenty-four hour period. It categorizes
movement into one of four groups: stand-
ing, sitting, walking, and lying down. At
the end of the data collection, the informa-
tion is then entered into a database that dis-
plays charts and graphs of the activity dur-
ing the test period.
There was a $550 prize for first place, and
it was the first time that Grove City entered
the competition. There were thirteen
