Dear Marvin: As one of the sponsors of the Katanga Freedom Fighters Committee may I offer you a suggestion? Since the organization is called "American Committee for Aid to Katanga Freedom Fighters", it ought to stick to this task precisely and not get involved in many other international problems. In that way the Committee will be more effective. The advertisement in The Times today is headed: "On the Evidence of Katanga. :SHALL WE BAIL THE U.N. OUT OF BANKRUPTCY?" Now although I am in agreement with the idea that we ought not bail the U.N. out of bankruptcy, I do not believe you advance your cause by getting involved in this question. I am not sure, but I think that some of the original sponsors of the Committee might even disagree with the premise of this headline. I personally do not disagree at all, but others might. Anyway, I feel that published advertisements of the Committee should not commit the sponsors to state- ments that are not directly and immediately related to helping Katanga Freedom Fighters. This is the main point of my letter. I am uncomfortable in the feeling that my name is attached to a group which may range over the entire international scene and express opinions about which I may have some reservations. I know very well that you may argue that if the U.N. goes into bankruptcy then Katanga will have more chance of gaining its freedom.
