LIBERTY LOBBY
HEADQUARTERS OFFICE:
825 DUPONT CIRCLE BUILDING
WASHINGTON 6, D.C.
January 8, 1962
PHONE: CO 5-8378
Dear Friend:
Regarding the upcoming fight over who will control our economic sovereignty--Congress
or foreign interests--it is disturbing to look at the forces which oppose us, desiring
American absorption into a world economic system. Virtually every large and vocal
pressure group in America is on the wrong side of this issue.
First, of course, are the Marxists of varying hues and aromas. All Marxists believe in
world free trade as a matter of principle; further, they desire to weaken America by
forcing essential mines and industry to close, making us dependant upon far-off sources
of supply. Secondly there are the enormously powerful manipulators of international
finance; free trade means even better business for the international bankers. Thirdly
are great elements of big business. Every businessman knows the profit of closing up
plants in America, building overseas, employing foreign workers and exporting to Amer-
ica. Fourth is the entire weight of the Administration and the bureaucrats. To these
gentry, free trade means a bonanza of government spending, higher taxes, more controls.
Fifth are most of the labor bosses, such as Walter Reuther. In spite of the wishes and
best interests of their men, these men are Marxists first and labor leaders second.
Sixth are the pathetic rightwing internationalists who, for the sake of their unworkable,
utopian principle of "free trade" are actively assisting those who work for the ruination
of America. In this critical juncture of American history, I must describe these persons
as judas goats who, if followed, will lead us all to slaughter.
These are the pressure groups which oppose us. On our side we have only a few trade
associations and three very ill-financed and weak business groups. And, in spite of
what you might expect, both the NAM and the Chamber of Commerce are NOT on the side
of America in this issue.
There is one asset we have, however, that the internationalists can never hope to have.
This is the unorganized majority of the people. If these millions ever realize the true
implications of the so-called "trade" battle; if the workers ever realize how their
Marxist union leaders are selling them down the river, and if the conservatives ever
identify the judas-goats among their leaders, then the rest of the pressure group bosses
will fall like cornstalks in a hailstorm.
The leftists are well aware of this. Unable to argue coherently, they have already got-
ten out the tar bucket to smear their opponents. In the December 27 Washington POST
appeared an article, for example, in which patriots who oppose the giveaway of our SOV-
ereignty were accused of being muddle-headed neurotics who advocate illegitimate politi-
cal influence because they are "sick radicals", "emotional isolationists" and "negativists."
Such words of endearment even before the battle starts reminds us that the going may get
a little rough, later on.
In this battle, the LIBERTY LOBBY takes a stand-whether we must fight against every
selfish, powerful interest in America or not. We take a stand because we must do so--
because we have an obligation and a responsibility to stand up for America regardless
of the consequences.
One of the cute little myths of the smearbund is that those who stand up for America are
well-financed. I assure you that this is ridiculously naive and totally false. Every
intelligent anti-communist knows that the exact opposite is true: the internationalist,
