Dear Sir:
Now that most newspapers, magazines, TV and radio
stations have lavished praise and compromise on the
insulting Washington bureaucrat, Mr. Newton Minow, I
think some "real" information is in order.
Mr. Minow holds the weapon, the gun, or its sub-
stitute -- the power to revoke or renew licenses.
Observe Mr. Minow using this power as a threat to the
TV industry, and observe him trying to "enforce his
views of television to the producers of television in
the name of the national interest or public good, what-
ever that is. If this isn't the role of a being who is
clamoring, menacing and threatening to become a
communications dictator, a throttler of free speech, is
it from lack of intent that he hasn't gotten there yet?
Or has this country never understood what kind of men
comprised the Third Reich in Hitler Germany, or a cultural
dictator in Socialist Russia?
Well, let me tell Mr. Minow what I think of him and
of his destructive ideas: I'll tell him, but, not like he,
won't (and can't) hold a gun over his head and force him
to give in to them. Unlike Mr. Minow who wishes to act
in the name of some indefineable general or public good
which be scorns anyway in lieu of his own brilliant ideas,
I write this letter in the spirit of an individual address-
ing an individual.
Whether the "public" is aware of it or not, there are
a number of individuals left in this country, I'm sure, who
are quite aware that this cynical being is insulting not only
television, but also the other media of expression and free
speech in the communications field. If Mr. Minow WASHAS to
change the Constitution or any of its amendments, let him
say that he wishes to change it. If he wants to destroy
intellectual freedom, why doesn't be say so?
I would like to see Mr. Minow and those like him
weeded out of Washington. Their schemes are as destructive
to the mind of this country as a dope peddler's is to the
body.
