FOURTH ANNUAL NATIONAL STRATEGY SEMINAR
US ARMY WAR COLLEGE

10 - 13 June 1958
The purpose of the National Strategy Seminar is to develop a concept of
national strategy and a supporting military program.
The Seminar will start at 1:20 p. m., 10 June 1958; it will conclude with
luncheon, 13 June 1958. During the first afternoon, guests will attend an in-
telligence briefing by the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Follow-
ing this, student committees will orient their respective guests concerning the
problem, and will brief them on the student-prepared concepts. The next two
days will be devoted to lectures, question periods, and joint guest-student com-
mittee discussions. During the committee discussions, the national strategies
previously prepared by the student committees will be examined in light of
political, economic, military and psychological considerations. During the
last morning, one or more committees will present findings. Significant aspects
will be discussed in plenary session.

A survey of the world situation in 1958 with emphasis on projected trends
affecting the security interests of the United States and national strategy
designed for their protection and promotion.
Political Aspects of National Strategy
9:00 a. m., 11 June 1958 (The Honorable John Foster Dulles)
An examination of US foreign policy goals and their attainment in relation to
national strategy, the relevant interrelationships of domestic and short and long
range political foreign policy considerations and of political with economic,
military and psychological considerations, and the integration and harmoniza-
tion of US efforts over the long term.
Economic Aspects of National Strategy
11:00 a. m., 11 June 1958 (Professor Arthur F. Burns)
A discussion of the role and influence of economic factors and agencies in the
formulation and implementation of US national strategy. Particular attention is
devoted to the interrelationships of economic with other factors in serving and
shaping the national strategy.
Military Aspects of National Strategy
9:00 a. m. 12 June 1958 (General Maxwell D. Taylor, USA)
A discussion of the role and influence of military considerations in relation
to national strategy, the interrelationships of military with other factors in
serving and shaping the national strategy, and the derivative problems and re-
quirements of the Army in accomplishing its missions in support of the national
strategy.
